How to Release Music as an Independent Artist

You don't need a label to get your music out there. Here's a practical guide to releasing your first single independently.

How to Release Music as an Independent Artist

There has never been a better time to release music on your own terms. The tools, platforms, and knowledge that used to be locked behind record deals are now available to anyone with a finished track and an internet connection. Here's how to get your music out into the world - the right way.

Choose a Distribution Platform

To get your song on Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon, and all the other streaming services, you'll need a distributor. Platforms like DistroKid, TuneCore, and CD Baby act as the middleman between you and the streaming world. They handle the technical side so you can focus on the music.

Each platform has different pricing and features, so do your research. Some charge a flat annual fee, others take a percentage of royalties. Pick the one that fits your budget and release schedule.

Plan Your Release Timeline

Don't just upload your track and hit publish. Give yourself at least four to six weeks of lead time. This lets you build anticipation, pitch to playlists, and line up your promotional content. A well-planned release always outperforms a rushed one.

Set your release date, then work backwards. When do you need artwork? When should you set up your pre-save link? When do you start posting teasers? Having a clear timeline takes the stress out of launch day.

Get Your Artwork Right

Your cover art is the first thing people see. It needs to look professional and reflect the mood of the track. You don't need to spend a fortune - platforms like Canva can help you create clean, eye-catching designs. But if design isn't your strength, investing in a graphic designer is worth every dollar.

Make sure your artwork meets the platform specs. Most streaming services require a square image, at least 3000 x 3000 pixels, in JPEG or PNG format.

Set Up a Pre-Save Campaign

Pre-saves are one of the most valuable tools for independent artists. When fans pre-save your track, it automatically appears in their library on release day - which signals to the streaming algorithms that people care about your music. Use tools like Feature.fm or Linkfire to create a pre-save link you can share everywhere.

Promote on Social Media

Start talking about your release well before it drops. Share behind-the-scenes clips from the studio. Post lyric snippets. Tease the artwork. Build a story around the song that makes people want to hear it.

On release day, make it impossible to miss. Post across every platform, share your streaming link in your bio, and ask your network to share it too. Don't be shy - you made something worth hearing.

Think Beyond Day One

The biggest mistake independent artists make is treating release day as the finish line. It's actually the starting line. Keep promoting your track for weeks after it drops. Create content around it. Pitch it to playlist curators. Perform it live. The longer you keep the momentum going, the further your music will travel.
